I used the GIF optimizer with the Santa file because there are large areas of color. After optimizing him, I decided I wanted to make the background transparent, a difficult task because of the areas of white in his beard. The optimizer made much of his beard transparent, too, so I set the tolerance very low and selected the white background. Then I used Selections/Modify/Contract to move the selection close to the beard. Then I used Edit/Copy and Edit/Paste as new selection to place him on a transparent background. Then I zoomed in on the graphic and used the eraser tool to erase stray pixels outside the image. It turned out very well, so well, in fact, that I made him into a tube. With or without the transparent background, the file is 6 KB in size.

The second file was saved as a jpg file because it is a photograph with multiple colors. At 40 percent compression, it was 5.4 KB in size. At 60 percent, it was 4 KB in size. I could see little deterioration in the quality of the picture at 60 percent, so I selected that one for presentation.
For this picture I used the gif format, again because of the large areas of color (even though this may have been a photo originally). It is 15.7 KB in size. After I made the background transparent, it was 17 KB in size. (Not sure I understand why! It seems it should have been smaller with less color - white!)

For picture 5 I selected the jpg format because of the variation in shades of color. It didn't work when I decided to try gif! It is compressed at 50 percent, is 7.4 KB in size.
This picture has photograph qualities, which made it necessary to save it with the jpg format. I compressed this picture at several percentages. The 60 percent compression reduced the size with little loss of picture quality. The size saving when compressing it to 70 percent wasn't worth the quality deterioration. At 60 percent the size is 10.8 KB.
